The Project

SL Construction Services were selected as a preferred specialist contractor to complete resurfacing and waterproofing works of the Kessock Bridge at Inverness, Scotland. A major infrastructure assett owned by Transport for Scotland. Early Contractor involvement saw SL Construction Services and their Specalist Partner Aeschlimann AG become prefered single partner to complete the refurbishment of the bridge decks. The works are being completed in two phases, phase 1 to the North bound side from February 2013 to June 2013 and Phase 2 to the South bound side from February 2014 to June 2014.

The Works

The scope of works comprises removal of the existing waterproofing system to the entire bridge. Preparation of the existing steel bridge to SA 2½ standard. Installation of the Eliminator waterproofing system and installation of Aeschlimann Gussasphalt to the carrigeways central reserve and cycleways. The programme demands require half of the bridge to be completed whilst full traffic flows are present requiring strict controls on construction activity adjacent live traffic and the public. A strict management process has ensured all materials and construction processes are completed to strict safety and environment standards required in an area of outstanding natural beauty and wild life situated over the Moray Firth. A major coastal feature in the British Isles. All works were planned in detail to ensure full Safety, Quality and Environmental Compliance. A Specialist combined waterproofing and surfacing system used successfully on major cable and suspension bridges saw the Eliminator and Gussasphalt surfacing system installed to some 25,000m² of bridge deck to provide a flexible combined waterproofing and surfacing solution. The project will see the life span of the Kessock Bridge extended for some 20 – 30 years.
